The selection panel in 1995 included William Feaver, Gary Garrels, George Loudon, Elizabeth MacGregor and Nicholas Serota.

Hirst was awarded the prize for his curatorship of, and contribution to, ‘Some Went Mad, Some Ran Away’ (Serpentine Gallery, London, 1994), as well as for presentations of his work in the UK and abroad. At the Turner Prize exhibition, he showed a spot painting and a work from his ‘Natural History’ series, ‘Mother and Child Divided’ (1993), previously exhibited at the 1993 Venice Biennale.
